The Early Cold War
The Korean War

Communist North Korea's invasion of South Korea in June 1950 sparked a devastating three-year war. Eight Canadian destroyers ultimately served in Korean waters as part of Canada's contribution to United Nations forces fighting the invasion.

Soviet Torpedo

Captured in North Korea, this Second World War-era Soviet torpedo was brought to Canada for examination and testing.

This torpedo was likely one of a number discovered by the United States' First Marine Division near Wonsan, North Korea, in October 1950. The destroyer HMCS Sioux brought this torpedo, along with other examples of captured equipment including naval mines, to Canada for examination and testing. In 1960, the Royal Canadian Navy transferred this weapon to the Canadian War Museum, substituting a bright orange practice warhead for the Soviet original.
