Curator Tour – She Who Tells a Story

Plan Your Visit

Join Joanne Stober, Historian of War and Visual Culture, on a tour of our latest exhibition, She Who Tells a Story. She will discuss the context of the works and how the women photographers in the exhibition are redefining documentary photography.

She Who Tells a Story brings together over 85 photographs taken by 12 women photographers from Iran and the Arab world. Together, these evocative images, ranging from fine art to photojournalism, challenge Western conceptions and provide insight into the contemporary social and political landscape of the Middle East.

In Arabic, the word rawiya means “she who tells a story.” Although long removed from the legends of the “Persian” Queen Sheherazade and the “Arabian” One Thousand and One Nights, the work of these 12 women presents a compelling narrative and insights about life in the Middle East today. The exhibition is divided into three thematic areas: challenging Western notions about the “Orient” (Deconstructing Orientalism); redefining documentary as a genre (New Documentary); and examining the complexities of identity (Constructing Identity).
