Many soldiers of the First World War sought to escape the mud and misery of the trenches by taking to the skies. But what looked romantic from the ground was both dangerous and difficult, and came with its own set of physical challenges.

In this hands-on activity, visitors will learn more about what it was like to be a pilot or observer during the First World War. Older children and adults will take on a dexterity challenge that involves changing the cartridge on a Lewis machine gun reproduction.
