Last chance to catch War and Medicine at the Canadian War Museum

November 10, 2011

Ottawa, Ontario, November 7, 2011—Time is running out to join 90,000 visitors who have seen War and Medicine, presented by Rx&D, at the Canadian War Museum. Don’t miss your final opportunity to see this intriguing exhibition which explores the uneasy relationship between military conflict and the medical profession at its only North American venue.  It closes on Tuesday, November 15.

War and Medicine examines the challenges of military medicine from the Crimean War (1854–1856) to contemporary conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. The powerful presentation illustrates the devastating impact of disease, physical injury and psychological trauma on fighting forces, and shows some of the struggles medical professionals have endured to keep up with medical treatment.

“We are pleased that War and Medicine has resonated so deeply with visitors,” said Mark O’Neill, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation, which includes the Canadian War Museum. “The personal stories woven through the intriguing science and history on display clearly demonstrate the physical and psychological injuries of war, while recognizing the diligence and compassion of those who try to repair the damage.”

The exhibition was created by Wellcome Collection in London, United Kingdom and the Deutsches Hygiene Museum in Dresden, Germany. War and Medicine features items on loan from more than 50 institutions and private collections in Europe and North America. Canadian content figures prominently, with 100 artifacts, haunting images and works of art from the War Museum’s national collections, and others from the McGill Pathology Museum in Montréal, the Museum of Health Care at Kingston, the National Gallery of Canada, and Library and Archives Canada.

The Canadian War Museum is Canada’s national museum of military history. Its mission is to promote public understanding of Canada’s military history in its personal, national, and international dimensions.
