Ten paintings by Molly Lamb Bobak on display at the Canadian War Museum until March 31, 2014

March 13, 2014

Ottawa, Ontario, March 13, 2014 — In honour of the life and achievements of Molly Lamb Bobak, following her passing on March 2, the Canadian War Museum will display 10 of her works in the hallway leading to the permanent galleries until March 31, 2014. The War Museum holds a total of 115 of her works in the Beaverbrook Collection of War Art.

With her death, Canada lost not only the first Canadian woman to be sent overseas as an official war artist, but also the last official war artist from the Second World War.

Bobak studied at the Vancouver School of Art, before joining the Canadian Women’s Army Corps (CWAC) in 1942 to have a part in the war. She quickly decided she wanted to be an official war artist and, after nearly three years of persistent effort, was appointed to the position in May 1945.

Posted to Holland after VE (Victory in Europe) Day, she painted the daily tasks and experiences of her fellow CWACs. She married war artist Bruno Bobak (1923–2012) in 1945 and continued to paint for the rest of her life.
