Military History Research Centre

Research Facilities and Services

Visitors to the Military History Research Centre will find a comfortable main reading room overlooking a landscape design inspired by the First World War battlefield of Beaumont Hamel, France. An Archives Reading Room is also available for researchers accessing archival documents, photographs and rare books. Our staff is always available to assist you with your research, answer your questions, and assist you in accessing our collections.

  • Assistance in locating items in our open collection;
  • Written documentation on the most frequently used services;
  • Referral on other resources suitable for your research;
  • Reading areas for carrying out your research;
  • Photocopier and reproduction services available;

Consulting Our Collections

For security purposes personal belongings including briefcases, backpacks, oversize purses/bags, larger than 30 x 40 cm, folders umbrellas, and outerwear such as overcoats and raincoats, must be stored in the cloakroom and/or lockers near the entrance to the Military History Research Centre. Small purses, wallets, research notes, personal computers without carrying cases, and personal dictation devices may be taken into the research centre.

Eating and drinking are prohibited in the research centre.

Cell phone use is prohibited in the research centre.

If you are requesting items from the archival or rare book collections, you will be asked to complete a Visitor Registration Form, as well as review our Guidelines for Handling Material in the Military History Research Collections.

Interlibrary Loan

Although the Hartland Molson Library Collection is non-circulating, many of the documents in the collection are available through interlibrary loan. Please contact your local public, university or departmental library to arrange for an interlibrary loan. Material from the George Metcalf Archival Collection is not available for interlibrary loan.

Length of Interlibrary Loans:

Four weeks, renewable once.

Restrictions on Interlibrary Loans:

Reference material and periodicals are not available for loan. Regimental histories, pamphlets, and military technical manuals are available for loan only if duplicate copies are held. Some materials may be loaned to other libraries on a ‘for use in borrowing library only’ basis.
