The Canadian government sent a relatively small military expedition to fight with the British during the South African War, but the decision to support allies overseas was significant.<\/p>\n<p>In the First World War, more than 620,000 Canadians enlisted to fight for Crown and country. The Canadian Corps was involved in costly battles at the Somme, Vimy, Passchendaele, Amiens, Arras and Mons. Canadians also fought in the air war and at sea. On the home front, women entered the workforce in support of the war effort, patriotic organizations supported soldiers overseas, and the introduction of conscription severely damaged Canadian unity.
