- Additional Information A trained figure painter, MacDonald enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1941. In 1944 he was briefly a service artist before receiving an appointment as an official war artist. Most of his work was completed in Italy. From 1947 to 1973 he was the director of the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario.
