- Inscription WAR OFFICE MEDICAL DIVISION FIRST FIELD DRESSING TO OPEN Outer cover - Pull tapes apart. Inner Waterproof cover - Tear apart uncemented corners as indicated by the arrow. CONTENETS - Two Dressings in waterproof covers, each consisting of a Gauze Pad, stitched to a Bandage, and a Safety Pin. DIRECTIONS FOR USE - Take the Folded ends of the Bandage in each hand and keeping the Bandage taut apply the Gauze Pad to the wound and fix the bandage, One Dressing to be used for each wound. - Additional Information This field dressing, containing two dressings consisting of a cotton gauze pad, a bandage and a safety pin, was a simple but important tool for battlefield stretcher-bearers in providing immediate medical attention to the wounded. Each soldier also carried one of these dressings, which had detailed instructions for opening and applying it.
