PRINCE OF WALES; NOTABILITIES A SERIES OF 25 No.2 H.R.H. Prince of Wales Edward Albert Prince of Wales was born June 23, 1894. He was educated at Oxford and served with the Oxford O.T.C. while at the University. On the outbreak of hostilities he joined the Grenadier Guards (1st Battalion) as a 2nd Lieutenant. The Prince proceeded on active service with his regiment, which was quartered on the E. Coast. He has also identified himself whit the National Relief Fund, on behalf of which he made an eloquent appeal. The financial response created a record in National Benevolence. - Additional Information Born in Ottawa in 1878, Elson was a gardener by trade. He was attested in 1915 in the 77th Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF). He arrived in England in June 1916 and transferred to the 72nd Battalion. He embarked for France in August where he was attached to a trench mortar battery for a course in the field until October. He was killed in action on 15 August 1917.

- Additional Information This cigarette box was manufactured expressly for the 77th Battalion, an Ottawa unit that was later broken up to reinforce other front-line battalions, by the Phillip Morris Company. Cigarettes, one of the few luxuries afforded First World War soldiers, were important for maintaining morale.
