One called the Gatling a "patent murdering machine." In reality, the Gatlings produced more sound than casualties. Under attack by a hand-cranked machine-gun, the Métis at Batoche took shelter in rifle pits and shot back with hunting rifles and shotguns, including this Spencer rifle. They nicknamed the Gatling rababou (noisemaker).
