- Additional Information In 1981, the 25th anniversary of the founding of UNEF I, the United Nations Association of Canada awarded Burns its Pearson Peace Medal. It honoured his contributions to UNEF as well as his later work in the area of nuclear disarmament.

- Additional Information Burns was respected in Egypt for his even-handed leadership (1954-1956) of the United Nations Truce Supervisory Organization. Nasser readily accepted him as UNEF's first commander. Burns' threat to resign if Nasser vetoed Canadian military participation helped ensure that UNEF included Canadians.
