- Additional Information Burns was respected in Egypt for his even-handed leadership (1954-1956) of the United Nations Truce Supervisory Organization. Nasser readily accepted him as UNEF's first commander. Burns' threat to resign if Nasser vetoed Canadian military participation helped ensure that UNEF included Canadians.
