- Additional Information Most soldiers in the First World War did not wear armour because it was heavy and bulky. This steel German armour, composed of multiple plates to increase the wearer's mobility, would have been worn by a sentry in a trench or a machine gunner. Three bullets or projectiles struck this armour. The armour deflected two rounds, but a third penetrated the steel, likely killing the wearer.
