- Additional Information Throughout the seventeenth century, First Peoples and French settlers formed alliances and fought to survive the catastrophic conflicts known as the Post-Contact Wars (1608-1701). This heroic sculpture of Madeleine de Verchères defending her home against Iroquois attackers in 1690 presents a heavily romanticized image of these wars, viewed from a French perspective.
