- Additional Information Formed in 1808 as a mounted unit, the United States Light Artillery served largely on foot in several invasions of Upper and Lower Canada in 1813 and 1814. Its distinctive brass shako plate was the largest headdress insignia used by a unit of the U.S. Army during the War of 1812.
