- Additional Information American patriotic societies use markers to commemorate veterans and identify their graves. This one was manufactured in Boston, Massachusetts, and placed on the grave of an American veteran of 1812 by the General Society of the War of 1812, the origins of which date back to 1841. Historian Donald R. Hickey has estimated that about 35,000 American, British, Canadian, and Native American men, women, and children were killed in action or died from other causes as a result of the war.
