Additional Information
James McCulloch was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, on 21 May 1895. He was the eldest of Peter and Mary McCulloch’s five children. In 1908, the family immigrated to Canada and settled in Saskatchewan.
A farmer, McCulloch enlisted in the 65th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Saskatchewan) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on 18 March 1916. He was later transferred to the 72nd Canadian Infantry Battalion (Seaforth Highlanders of Canada).
McCulloch was killed in Belgium on 30 October 1917, when his battalion successfully assaulted German positions around Crest Farm during the Battle of Passchendaele. According to the battalion’s war diary, the battalion’s advance was aided by effective artillery support that severely hampered the German’s ability to mount a coherent defense.
James McCulloch is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, in Belgium.
