- Inscription ‘PAIR OF BRASS PISTOLS’ ‘used by Lieutenant James Johns, RM in the action between HMS Shannon and USS Chesapeake, 1st June 1813, Johns joined HMS Shannon as 2nd Lieutenant Royal Marines (Chatham 43 Company) 1st November, 1810; promoted 1st Lieutenant and transferred to Plymouth 120 Company, 29th January 1811. He used these pistols leading the Royal Marines boarding party in the capture of the Chesapeake off Boston. He was discharged to Plymouth Headquarters 29th November 1813 and placed on half pay list 1st September 1814. Last appeared in Navy List in 1851.’
