For the most part, First World War artists had not participated in the battles they portrayed. They worked from photographs, personal recollections, official accounts and film footage to reconstruct battles. Most preferred a traditional approach, sensing that to stray too close to a modern style would be viewed as inappropriate for the subject matter.
