Major Learmonth, a Quebec recipient of the Empire’s highest award for bravery, died at the age of 23 during the Canadian assault on Hill 70, on August 18, 1917.

A young Apollo, golden-haired,
Stands dreaming on the verge of strife,
Magnificently unprepared
For the long littleness of life.
