This field dressing, containing two dressings consisting of a cotton gauze pad, a bandage and a safety pin, was a simple but important tool for battlefield stretcher-bearers in providing immediate medical attention to the wounded. Each soldier also carried one of these dressings, which had detailed instructions for opening and applying it.
