Harold Leigh Shearman was born in Maxwell, Ontario, on 13 February 1889. He was the son of William and Hannah Shearman. His father was a cabinetmaker.

A clerk, Shearman enlisted in the 15th Canadian Infantry Battalion at Valcartier Camp, Quebec, on 20 September 1914. He sailed to England as part of the First Contingent of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 3 October 1914. After training on Salisbury Plain for four months, the Contingent was shipped to France in February 1915.

Shearman died at Saint Julien, Belgium, on 29 April 1915, during the Second Battle of Ypres. His body was lost.

Harold Leigh Shearman is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, in Ypres, Belgium.
