Edward Phillip Watson was born in Flint, Michigan, United States, on 8 July 1895. He was the son of Edward and Ella Watson. By 1901, the Watson family had moved to Sarnia, Ontario.

A factory hammer operator, Watson was conscripted for military service on 10 January 1918, in London, Ontario. He served in the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion (Western Ontario).

Watson was killed in action on 1 October 1918, in the 1st Battalion’s attack on German positions occupying the high ground near the French village of Abancourt (30 September to 2 October 1918), during the Hundred Days Offensive. He was one of the 183 casualties his unit suffered in the attack.

Edward Phillip Watson is buried in Sancourt British Cemetery, in France.
