Morley Ellwood Branscombe was born on 10 February 1876 to Reuben and Sara Branscombe in Picton, Ontario. His father was a farmer in Prince Edward County and, by the 1881 Census, Morley was living with his parents, grandmother and a younger sister. On 10 September 1907 he married Annie E. Patterson, listing his profession as physician. After the war broke out, Branscombe joined the 16th Regiment of the Canadian Militia and wrote his lieutenant exams in April 1915. Two months later he had also passed his captain’s exam.
Morley joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) at Kingston on 22 July 1918. He left Canada in December of 1918 and spent his overseas time as a doctor with the Canadian Army Medical corps at the 12th Canadian General Hospital at Bramshott and then the 16th General Hospital at Orpington. Captain Branscombe returned to Canada on 15 July 1919 in SS Regina and was demobilized a week later.
Dr. Branscombe gave Picton as his return address but moved shortly after to Belleville, Ontario, where he lived the rest of his life as a practicing physician. He died in 1950 and is buried in the Glenwood Cemetery in Picton.
