Herbert Spanner was born in Muskoka, Ontario, on 30 May 1893.

Spanner served as a pilot in the 27th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. He was killed by anti-aircraft fire on 28 December 1916, while flying over the Somme.

Herbert Spanner is buried in Ervillers Military Cemetery, in France.
