Frank Shipway was born in Cleveland, Somerset, England, on 28 February 1895.

A farm labourer, Shipway enlisted in the 39th Canadian Infantry Battalion in Port Hope, Ontario, on 6 March 1915. He was later transferred to the 25th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Nova Scotia Rifles). He was killed on 3 June 1916, during the Battle of Mount Sorrel, when a trench mortar shell landed in the trench where he was on duty.

Frank Shipway is buried in Reninghelst New Military Cemetery, in Belgium.
