William Edward Thompson was born in Toronto, Ontario, on 16 October 1895.

A labourer, Thompson enlisted in the 251st Canadian Infantry Battalion on 30 September 1916 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was later transferred to the 8th Canadian Infantry Battalion (90th Rifles). He had prior military experience, having served in the United States National Guard as a bugler. Thompson died at No. 4 Canadian General Hospital in Basingstoke, England, after an appendectomy.

William Edward Thompson is buried in Basingstoke (Worting Road) Cemetery, Basingstoke, England.
