Bert Speller was born in London, England, on 9 November 1896.

A liveryman (employee of a stable where horses and carriages could be hired), Speller enlisted in the 70th Canadian Infantry Battalion in Dresden, Ontario, on 29 September 1915. He was later transferred to the 8th Canadian Infantry Battalion (90th Rifles).

Speller died in France on 15 August 1917, during the Battle of Hill 70, near Lens. His body was lost.

Bert Speller is commemorated on the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, on Vimy Ridge, in France.
