Thomas Bowdridge was born on 5 March 1894 in Upper Burgeo, Newfoundland, to Thomas, a fisherman, and Harriett Bowdridge. During the war Thomas became a seaman and served in the merchant navy, sailing in threatened waters during the war. Although there is no public record of the ships he served on, in July 1922 he was awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal in recognition of this service.

After the war he is recorded as a deck hand in a ship sailing out of Shelburne, Nova Scotia, for Boston in 1938 and again on two more ships sailing out of the same port in 1941, listed as the ship’s cook. He died in Upper Burgeo on 13 April 1942.
