Dan Joseph Campbell was born in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, on 10 April 1898.

A labourer, Campbell enlisted in the 185th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Cape Breton Highlanders) in Sydney, Nova Scotia, on 1 April 1916. After initial training in Canada, he sailed with his unit to England on 13 October 1916 on SS Olympic, arriving in Liverpool on 18 October 1916.

In England, Campbell was transferred to the 193rd Canadian Infantry Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders) and then the 17th Reserve Battalion for further training. The 17th Reserve Battalion provided reinforcements to units already in the field.

On 4 July 1917, Campbell was finally sent to France as a reinforcement for the 85th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders). After further training and preparation behind the lines, he joined the battalion in the field on 6 November 1917.

Campbell was killed by enemy machine gun fire on 2 September 1918 while his unit attacked the Drocourt-Quéant Line in the vicinity of Dury, France, during the Hundred Days Offensive.

Dan Joseph Campbell is buried in Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery, in France.
