Henry Edward Wray was born in London, England, on 27 April 1898. It is not known when he immigrated to Canada, but by 1916, he was living in Toronto, Ontario.

A munitions worker, Wray enlisted at the No. 2 Canadian Army Service Corps Training Depot, in Toronto, Ontario, on 13 November 1916. He was later transferred to the 58th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Central Ontario).

Wray died at No. 3 Field Ambulance on 29 August 1918 from wounds he received during the 58th Battalion’s assault on German positions at Sart Wood and Boiry-Notre-Dame, in France, part of the Hundred Days Offensive. The battalion’s advance was hotly contested by German defenders who were well dug in, and used a large amount of artillery and gas, as well as small arms fire, against the Canadians. As a result, the 58th Battalion suffered heavy casualties. In the space of three days (27–29 August), 274 of its men were either killed, wounded or reported missing.

Henry Edward Wray is buried in Faubourg d’Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.
