Halifax Mortar

Halifax Mortar

Britain’s primary naval base in North America, Halifax served as a port for the Royal Navy squadrons blockading the eastern seaboard of the United States. This mortar, captured by the British at Louisbourg in 1758, formed part of the defences of Halifax during the War of 1812. Made of cast iron, it could propel a 60-kilogram shell up to four kilometres.
