PALM TREE RADAR
A radar station commanded by Flying Officer Stan Martin of Kitchener, Ontario detected the first Japanese raid on Singapore in 1941. Despite being under direct attack, the radar station continued to operate - on one occasion draping its aerials over nearby palm trees in order to stay in action. Martin received the British Empire Medal for his ingenuity and initiative in maintaining operations under fire.
