ELECTRONIC WARFARE
In February 1942, the Germans temporarily neutralized British radar in the
first successful use of "electronic warfare". For three days - while
preparing to move several warships up the English Channel from bases in
France to bases on the North Sea, where they would be farther from Allied
attack - the Germans gradually increased the level of electronic "noise"
being detected by British radar. This tactic effectively "blinded"
unsuspecting British radar operators, who were unable to determine real
targets from background "noise". Twenty-one German warships escaped
to the North Sea.
