War Museum Historian Short-Listed for History Book Prize

April 12, 2012

Ottawa, Ontario, April 12, 2012—The Canadian War Museum congratulates its Second World War historian, Dr. Jeff Noakes, for being short-listed for the 2012 Canadian Political History Book Prize. The prize, which honours a publication from the past year that made a significant and meritorious contribution to the field of Canadian political history, will be awarded in May at the annual meeting of the Canadian Historical Association.

Dr. Noakes is short-listed for Acts of Occupation: Canada and Arctic Sovereignty, 1918-25, which he co-authored with Janice Cavell, a historian with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. The book offers a compelling insight into the early days of Canada’s Arctic policy. Acts of Occupation: Canada and Arctic Sovereignty, 1918-25 is one of six books on a short list selected from 29 submissions.

“We congratulate Dr. Noakes for receiving this richly-deserved recognition from his peers,” said James Whitham, Acting Director General of the Canadian War Museum. “We also thank him for drawing attention once again to the outstanding scholarship that is a hallmark of the historians and researchers at our national museum of military history.”

The Canadian Political History Book Prize is awarded by the Political History Group, a committee affiliated with the Canadian Historical Association. The 2012 winner will be announced at the Association’s annual conference, held this year May 28-30 in Waterloo, Ontario.

The Canadian War Museum is Canada’s national museum of military history. Its mission is to promote public understanding of Canada’s military history in its personal, national and international dimensions.
