Spotlight on War and Medicine: June programs at the Canadian War Museum


Ottawa, Ontario, May 19, 2011 — In conjunction with the opening of the exhibition War and Medicine on May 27, the Canadian War Museum has planned a series of tours, lectures and public programming. All activities are free with Museum admission unless otherwise indicated.


 


War and Medicine: Meet the Curators
May 28, 2 p.m.
John McCrae Gallery
In conjunction with the opening of War and Medicine, join historians Dr. Andrew Burtch and Dr. Tim Cook for an insider’s tour of the exhibition.


War and Medicine: Meet the Exhibition Team
June 4, 2 p.m.
John McCrae Gallery
Join members of the exhibition team for a tour of War and Medicine for an insider’s perspective on the making of the exhibition.

War and Medicine contains material and subject matter that some visitors may find disturbing. This includes graphic content related to human injury, illness, sexuality and medical procedures. It is strongly recommended that adults accompany and supervise children while visiting this exhibition.

 


Building Knowledge Lectures:


Tactical Medicine: The Experience of Paul Franklin as Medical Technician and Casualty
June 9, 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Barney Danson Theatre
Paul Franklin served as a medical technician with the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan where he was severely wounded. He has since undertaken a lengthy recovery and become an advocate for wounded Canadian soldiers. Come and hear his experiences as both a caregiver and a patient.

Soldier On: Supporting Wounded Canadian Forces Personnel
June 23, 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Barney Danson Theatre
Join Major-General (Ret’d) Lewis MacKenzie and the Soldier On team to learn about efforts to support wounded Canadian Forces personnel in their recovery. The drivers of the Soldier On Targa rally car, Master Corporal Jody Mitic and Corporal Andrew Knisley, will be on hand to share their experiences. They came in first in their class at the Newfoundland Targa Rally. Visitors also will be able to see the car as part of the exhibition.

The following programs will be offered on a rotating basis during weekends in June:


Battlefield Medicine
