Ottawa, Ontario, August 5, 2011 — For the fourth year in a row, the Canadian War Museum is proud to present the award-winning photographs from the prestigious World Press Photo contest for press photography.

Established in the Netherlands in 1955, the World Press Photo Foundation is a non-profit organization which encourages high professional standards in photojournalism and promotes a free and unrestricted exchange of information. It is best known for organizing the world’s largest and most prestigious annual press photography competition.

World Press Photo 2011 includes images taken in 2010 from recent and ongoing conflicts and encapsulates issues and events of journalistic importance. Through these exceptional photographs, visitors get a sense of the state of the world, and leave with a better understanding of military history and its role in shaping their lives,” stated James Whitham, Acting Director General of the Canadian War Museum.

The winning photos in the 2011 contest were selected by an international jury and assembled into a travelling exhibition, which will be visited by more than 2 million people in 80 major cities around the world.

The Canadian War Museum is the first of four Canadian venues on the international tour. The winning photographs will be on display in the Museum’s Lobby from August 5 to 28.

World Press Photo 2011 is presented in co-operation with the Embassy of the Kingdom of The Netherlands in Ottawa.

It is sponsored worldwide by Canon and TNT.
