Over The Top
You are tempted to reach over and grab the tin while no one is looking. However, you also remember what happened to other soldiers who had tried to grab souvenirs from No Man’s Land. The thought of a sniper‘s bullet hitting you squarely in the head makes you think twice.
No sooner do you dismiss the idea than you hear the distinctive sound of an enemy shell flying overhead. The shell lands somewhere off to your right and explodes in a blast of dirt. In seconds, more of th ominous shells begin to land in front and in back of you, causing the earth to shudder and quake.
You then realize that you are in an artillery bombardment with no place to take cover. Already, all of the men in your platoon have dropped their shovels and headed back to their dugouts. You decide to do the same. Within seconds, you are safely inside with the bombardment raging overhead.
