Napoleon Patenaude was born in Oakwood, North Dakota, United States, on 15 October 1891. It is not known when his family moved to Manitoba, Canada.

A farmer, Patenaude was conscripted on 11 November 1917, under the Military Service Act of 1917. He attempted to avoid service by using a false name, Paul Putnod, but was apprehended by military authorities on 18 June 1918.

One month later, on 18 July 1918, Patenaude was killed in a streetcar accident in St. Boniface, Manitoba. Military officials attributed his death to his war service.

Napoleon Patenaude is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
