Lancelot Smyth was born in Derriaghy, Ireland, on 17 March 1892.
A plasterer, Smyth enlisted in the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles (5 CMR) in Montréal, Quebec, on 6 February 1915. After training at Valcartier Camp, Quebec, Smyth and his unit sailed to England aboard SS Hesperian, embarking in Québec City, Quebec, on 18 July 1915. The 5 CMR landed in Plymouth on 29 July 1915.
In October 1915, Smyth arrived in France. On 23 February 1916, he was attached to the 2nd Trench Mortar Battery.
Smyth was hospitalized with furunculosis (boils) from 18 to 21 May 1916. At the end of June 1916, he was admitted to hospital with scabies, an infectious skin infestation caused by mites. He rejoined his unit on 6 July 1916.
Smyth was killed in action in France between 15 and 17 September 1916, during the Battle of the Somme. His body was later recovered.
Lancelot Smyth is buried in Sunken Road Cemetery, Contalmaison, France.
