Description
This artwork is part of a dramatic series of 36 large paintings commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the First World War. It was produced following a trip to Belgium and France where walks through trenches and graveyards with thousands of white headstones brought Lorimer to emotional exhaustion. Walking in the steps of the soldiers that helped shape Canada into what it is today was overwhelming, spiritual, and beautiful all at the same time.
The paintings are vibrant, chaotic and are meant to show both the beauty and horror of the time. Upon seeing the paintings for the first time, fellow Canadian artist Charles Pachter wrote, “Brian’s use of vivid primary colours throughout this series raises the imagery to a new level of expressionistic nightmare.”
