Ardizzone was best known as an illustrator before the war. He was commissioned to accompany the BEF to France in 1940, then employed to record events in the United Kingdom. Notable among these were the London and Glasgow Blitzes, and the Home Army in training. He was later sent to Cairo, Italy and Germany. Diary of a war artist, his sketchbook diaries from the war, was published in 1974.
