The Invasion of Normandy

The D-Day landings of June 6, 1944 marked the beginning of a prolonged and bloody campaign in Normandy, France. Canada’s D-Day responsibility was "Juno" Beach. After its successful capture, Canadians fought a fierce battle for the city of Caen. Difficult fighting brought them 32 kilometres further inland to Falaise in mid August. The seizure of this vital communications centre marked the end of the battle. Of the 18,444 Canadian casualties in the Normandy campaign, 5,021 were fatal.
