2008-2009: Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae Gallery

In the final days of the Second World War, American photographer John Swope travelled to Japan and documented in photographs and in a long, emotional letter to his wife the liberation of Allied prisoners of war and the war's devastating effect on the Japanese people and their country. Reminding us of the human cost of war. A Letter from Japan: The Photographs of John Swope presents over a hundred of Swope's photographs alongside poignant excerpts from his letter home, and provides a unique insight into one of the defining moments of the twentieth century.
