Research fellowship

About the Fellowship

The Canadian War Museum is dedicated to the creation and dissemination of knowledge. Original research supports the public’s experience, understanding, and appreciation of the Museum’s central role: exploring Canada’s military past in its personal, national and international dimensions.

In support of this commitment, the Museum launched a Research Fellowship program in 2023. This program hosts on-site work by postgraduate scholars and provides unique research access to Museum collections and experts. Fellows’ projects will enhance the Museum’s standing as a centre for leading scholarly research and public military history.

This is a funded program sustained by generous public donations and administered in trust.

Call for applications

The Research Fellowship is open to a postgraduate scholar conducting original research into the broad field of Canadian military history, with a focus on material culture and intangible cultural heritage. It is a one-year, non-renewable appointment, typically starting in September of each award year.

The Museum will be pleased to accept applications for the 2026-2027 Fellowship, in either official language, until July 26, 2026.

Research Fellow, 2025–2026: Alex Gagné

Alex Gagné recently completed a doctorate at York University. In his research, Alex studied juvenile immigration and child protection on the home front during the Great War. He is excited to delve into the Canadian War Museum’s collection of child-related material culture, such as uniforms, toys, and pedagogical resources. He plans to examine youth voluntary associations, such as the YMCA, and how their mandate and approach changed during the Great War.

Research Fellow, 2023–2024: Brittany Dunn

Brittany Dunn joined the Museum from Wilfrid Laurier University. As a scholar, Brittany has studied death and grief in the Great War, and is excited to have the opportunity to explore artifacts, objects and artwork from the Museum’s collection around that difficult topic.
