This portrait by John Sanders may be the only likeness of the famous playwright William Shakespeare to have been completed from real life.
The Canadian War Museum is proud to present the Sanders portrait in conjunction with the University of Ottawa’s international conference “Wartime Shakespeare in a Global Context” (18 to 20 September 2009). The conference brings together international experts to discuss the relationship between Shakespeare and war, including issues of national identity, cultural transformation, censorship, propaganda, and memory.
