Missing Lives

Plan Your Visit

Almost 35,000 people went missing during the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. Missing Lives explores this immense tragedy through the stories of 15 families, captured by photographer Nick Danziger and best-selling author Rory MacLean.

This exhibition consists of more than 40 images by renowned British photographer Nick Danziger. The accompanying text was written by Canadian author Rory MacLean. Together they tell the heartbreaking story of the families who lost loved ones during the wars in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

Today almost 15,000 people remain unaccounted for across the Western Balkans. This exhibition explores international and personal efforts to locate the missing, and to identify and repatriate their remains. It also acknowledges the suffering of all those families and reminds us that in war there is no greater loss than the disappearance of those we love.

An exhibition developed by the International Committee of the Red Cross, based on photographs by Nick Danziger and texts by Rory MacLean.
