Kabul Presidential Election Ballot
Elections Canada printed and distributed ballots such as this for Afghanistan’s 2003 presidential election — the country’s first democratic election in nearly 30 years. Canadian soldiers provided security on election day, monitoring polling stations and serving as a deterrent to disruption of the election by anti-democratic forces.
This ballot was collected by Nadia Ahmad, who was a policy advisor with the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade’s Afghanistan unit. It shows the image and personal symbol of the 18 candidates. The text is in Arabic.
