Rights and Permissions

The Canadian War Museum and the Canadian Museum of History are pleased to encourage the responsible use of their collections.

Reproductions of paintings, drawings and posters from the Beaverbrook Collection of War Art, photographs from the George Metcalf Archival Collection, or images of military artifacts from the museum’s collection can be custom-ordered through our Image Reproduction Services section. If you wish to use, reproduce or transmit any image, text or part of the collections for purposes other than personal or research use (such as for a book, brochure, CD or DVD, film or video, website, poster, exhibition, etc.), or should you wish to use the material for any purpose other than the ones already authorized, you must first obtain a written permission from the Canadian War Museum or the Canadian Museum of History.

  • Please submit your request using the online request form.
  • Please note that reproduction fees and usage fees are applicable and will vary according to the planned usage.
  • If the copyright on the work is not completely held by the Museum, the user must obtain written permission from the copyright owner.
  • The credit line, as specified by the Museums, is mandatory and unless otherwise advised, permission to use is granted on a non-exclusive and one-time basis only.
  • A period of 4 to 6 weeks may be necessary to process your request.

Should the online request form not be accessible, please submit a written request with the following information:

  • Your name
  • Name of your institution or company
  • Postal address
  • Fax number, telephone number and email address (if available)
  • List of the material you wish to use including the photo and catalogue numbers
  • Detailed description of your project, such as: title of your publication, program or product; name of publisher or producer; print run; sale price; date of production; language; rights required (Canadian, worldwide, etc.).
  • When ordering a photograph of an artwork or artifact, specify the format required.

Permissions and Usage Fees

To obtain permission to reproduce materials from the Canadian War Museum or the Canadian Museum of History, usage fees, apart from the reproduction fees, may apply and will vary according to the intended usage of such material.

General conditions

  • Requests must be made in writing with the online request form by mail, fax or email.
  • Administration fees of $10.00 per order are applicable.
  • Allow 4 to 6 weeks for request processing.
  • Research fees of $50.00 per hour may apply (first 30 minutes are free).
  • Discounts may apply for orders of 10 items or more.
  • All fees are in Canadian dollars and are subject to change without notice.
  • Fees do not include applicable taxes.
  • Credit line is mandatory and is supplied by the Museum.
  • Unless approved in advance by the Museum, material shall be reproduced in its entirety and shall not be retouched, obscured or altered in any way which could affect its historical or artistic integrity.
  • The War Museum and the Museum of History have the right to deny or withhold access to material from their collections.

Reproduction Fees

For permission to reproduce materials from the Canadian War Museum or the Canadian Museum of History, reproduction fees, apart from the usage fees, are applicable and will vary according to the format required. Fees are as follows:

  • Requests must be made in writing with the online request form, by mail, fax or email.
  • Administration fees of $10.00 per order are applicable.
  • Allow 4 to 6 weeks for request processing.
  • Research fees of $50.00 per hour may apply (first 30 minutes are free).
  • Add 100% to regular reproduction fees for urgent requests (rush service: 3 days).
  • Discounts may apply for orders of 10 items or more.
  • All fees are in Canadian dollars and are subject to change without notice.
  • Fees do not include applicable taxes, packaging and shipping costs.
  • All sales are final.
  • The War Museum and the Museum of History have the right to deny or withhold access to material from their collections.

Photo reproduction fees:

Digital image file (8X10 at 600 ppi) $25 each
Delivery via FTP site No charge
Delivery via CD $10 per CD

Additional fees may apply if new photography is required.

Textual document fees:

Photocopy 30¢ per page
PDF format (first 20 pages) $8.85
PDF format (additional pages, 21+) 50¢ per page
Digital image file (8X10 at 300 ppi) $15 each
Delivery via FTP site No charge
Delivery via CD $10 per CD

Additional fees may apply if other formats are required.

A/V Reproduction fees:

A/V and Audio Material FEES
CD or DVD $40
Editing fee (if applicable) $50 per hour

Additional fees may apply if other formats (ex: DV, Betacam, WAV, AVI, etc.) are required.
